SetClearType

Version 1.2
(February 9, 2004)

Download setcleartypeinst.exe (60 KB)

Note: Microsoft has a PowerToy that installs locally in the Control Panel now. It can be downloaded from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx

Installation

Installation is done by executing the SetClearTypeInst.exe program.
Click the "Unzip" button to start the installation. The install program copies SetClearType.exe in the folder 'C:\Program Files\JMBerthier' (default), and creates an entry in the Program Menu and an icon on the Desktop automatically.

Note : If you previously installed SetClearType using the Windows Installer (MSI), the program is listed in "Add/Remove Programs" option of the Control Panel. Please uninstall the previous version of the program before installing the current version.

How to Use

Check "Use Font Smoothing" for standard font smoothing (no other setting needed).
Check "UserClearType" to smooth font using ClearType™ on LCD display.

If the "Use ClearType" checkbox is checked, you may set the intensity using the ClearType Intensity slider.

Changes will show only when you click Apply (or hit the Enter key). These are permanent changes. If you want to revert to a previous setting, you should adjust the slider again and click Apply (or hit the Enter key).

Some user interface elements in the window will help you to visualize the effects of the setting.
In the sample window, you may change the font family and the size of the text font. Click the Font... button to change the font, and drag the slider on the left to change the size.

Note: The menu in the program window is a fake menu. It is here only to see how Cleartype is rendered over menus. The menu contains words with letter combination il, ll, illi, etc., which are very sensible to ClearType intensity setting; they create color blur that might be annoying.

ClearType Intensity

The ClearType intensity setting is between 1000 (maximum effect) and 2200 (minimum effect).
To revert to the default factory setting for ClearType, set the cursor to 1400, and click Apply.
